If you thought the idea of a €76,410 ($81,833) Volkswagen Golf R was absurd, you’re absolutely right and absolutely wrong as the limited edition Golf R 333 was an instant success.

The model went up for order earlier today in Germany and all 333 units were spoken for in eight minutes. That equates to nearly 42 vehicles per minute and that’s staggering when you consider the special edition is based on the Golf R Performance, which begins at €57,985 ($62,113). It’s also worth noting that a little over a decade ago, you could get a brand-new Phaeton for €68,300 ($73,170).

So what did €76,410 ($81,833) get a handful of Volkswagen fanatics? A spiffy new hot hatch featuring a Lime Yellow Metallic paint job that contrasts with a black roof and black 19-inch wheels wrapped in semi-slick tires. The model also has LED Matrix headlights, “333” graphics, and an Akrapovič exhaust system with titanium silencers. Rounding out the highlights are Nappa leather sport seats, a Harman Kardon premium audio system, carbon fiber-like trim, and a sequentially numbered badge on the dashboard.

Despite the significant price hike, the powertrain appears to carryover from the Golf R Performance as the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 329 hp (245 kW / 333 PS) and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. This enables the all-wheel drive hatch to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.6 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 168 mph (270 km/h).

Deliveries will begin in October and Volkswagen noted the model was being launched as a “potential collector’s item.”
