The Twitter-rivaling social media platform Threads made headlines in the past few days and Ford Performance decided to capitalize on that by teasing the Mustang Dark Horse R prior to its unveiling on July 27.

The Dark Horse R is another track variant of the seventh-generation Mustang, positioned above the Dark Horse S and below the more serious GT4 and GT3 racers which were recently unveiled in their full glory. The teaser includes a sketch of the rear end, looking just like the production-spec model albeit with a visible roll-cage inside the cabin. We can also see the new logo of Ford Performance alongside blue, red, and white graphics that could be replicated in the model’s presentation livery.

Ford Teases New Mustang Dark Horse R For Racing

Thankfully, Ford previewed all six racing variants of the new Mustang in September 2022 so we have a good idea of what to expect. Unlike the Dark Horse S which targets the “weekend track day enthusiast”, the Dark Horse R will be homologated for racing use.

The R will inherit a revised aerodynamics package with a prominent splitter at the front and an adjustable wing at the back producing more downforce. The quad-pipe exhaust will definitely be louder as it doesn’t have to comply with production car noise and emission regulations. Other details like the bonnet pins, tow hooks, and racing wheels will differentiate the R further.

Inside the stripped-out cabin, besides the FIA-approved roll cage, expect a single bucket seat for the driver, a quick-release steering, a fire extinguisher, and a custom panel for the knobs and switches. Under the bonnet, there will be a Coyote V8 engine although it is not clear if it will make more than the 500 hp (373 kW / 507 PS) of the standard Dark Horse. The chassis setup will be altered for the track with stiffer and lowered suspension featuring Multimatic DSSV dampers, alongside stronger brakes.
