Nissan appears to be preparing for a dystopian future as CarScoops reader Nick spotted this Mad Max-worthy Pathfinder in Arizona.

Looking ready for battle, the crossover’s front end has been gutted and replaced by a bumper that is little more than a thick slab of aluminum or steel. The destitute look continues further back as the model eschews cladding, fender flares, and a rear bumper.

While the prototype is partially camouflaged, there doesn’t appear to be any changes. As a result, we have more questions than answers.

That being said, Nick believes the model might be a plug-in hybrid. However, the prototype doesn’t appear to have a charging port and it’s not entirely clear what the yellow cable is in the engine compartment.

Of course, nothing is certain at this point and it’s possible this could be an old prototype. That being said, Automotive News suggests a facelifted Pathfinder could arrive in 2025.

There’s also another possibility as Nissan is working on a unique Pathfinder for the Chinese market. It was previewed by a concept earlier this year and featured a design that is “more suitable for the lifestyle and aesthetic values of Chinese consumers.”

Another outside chance is this being an early prototype for the upcoming Infiniti QX65 or a possible Nissan counterpart. The Infiniti is slated to arrive in 2025 and be based on the QX60, which is closely related to the Pathfinder.

With all that being said, what do you think the crossover is?

Thanks to Nick for sharing the photos!
