BMW is recalling certain 2023 740i, 760i xDrive, and i7 xDrive60 models due to a fault with the digital interaction bar, a slim display incorporated into the dashboard that is used to control various vehicle functions and systems.

The recall notice issued by the car manufacturer states that the interaction bar on the dashboard may not be able to activate the windshield defrosting system and/or the hazard warning lights. The control buttons for these functions may also fail to illuminate. BMW says the issue means vehicles may not fully conform with certain Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards but has not specified exactly what triggers the fault.

A total of 384 vehicles are involved in the recall. They consist of 259 examples of the BMW 740i and 760i xDrive built between September 6, 2022 and September 15, 2022 in addition to 125 units of the BMW i7 xDrive60 made between September 2, 2022 and September 15, 2022.

BMW 7-Series’ Fancy Dashboard ‘Interaction Bar’ Needs To Be Replaced On Certain Units

BMW first became aware of a potential issue when a 7-Series in South Korea was found to have an Interaction Bar that was not operating correctly. The car manufacturer then received further complaints from the Korean market and on March 8 and 9, two complaints from the U.S. market. An engineering investigation into the problem was launched on March 13 but it was initially unclear if specific vehicle software, over-the-air vehicle updates, or other factors caused the issue.

In June, BMW came to the conclusion that the problem may be caused by undervoltage conditions that could lead to performance issues with the interaction bar.

Dealers were notified of the recall on July 12 while owners will be informed from September 1. BMW will replace the interaction bar on vehicles where it is not functioning correctly.
