DS Automobiles unveiled the facelifted version of the DS3 last year but a new prototype of the French crossover fitted with a few spicy performance bits was caught during hot weather testing in Southern Europe. While the vehicle could be a mule for one of the upcoming small SUVs from other Stellantis brands, it could also preview a hotter variant of the DS3.

Interestingly, the company used the pre-facelifted DS3 Crossback as a base for the development prototype, missing out on the redesigned bumpers and lighting units of the current production model. The highlight though is the large-diameter alloy wheels that hide bigger front brakes with red-painted calipers. The suspension also appears to be lowered, giving it a sportier stance.

DS3 Prototype Spied Testing With Spicy Performance Bits
The hotter DS3 prototype (above) compared to the production-spec facelifted DS3 (below).

The prototype has a fully electric powertrain as hinted at by the lack of tailpipes and the E-Tense badge on the tailgate. The current DS3 E-Tense comes fitted with a single electric motor producing 154 hp (115 kW / 156 PS) and 260 Nm (191.8 lb-ft) of torque, an increase of 20 hp (15 kW / 20 PS) over the pre-facelifted model. Furthermore, the slightly larger 54 kWh battery pack allows a zero-emission range of 402 km (250 miles).

A possible performance version of the DS3 could bring a further increase in the power output and combine it with a sportier chassis setup for improved handling. DS could also spice up the exterior of the small SUV with a few styling tweaks.

Could It Be A Mule For Another Upcoming SUV?

The DS3 E-Tense is sharing the eCMP architecture with a variety of B-SUVs including the Opel Mokka, Peugeot 2008, Fiat 600e, Jeep Avenger, as well as the upcoming Alfa Romeo EV, Opel Crossland, and Citroen C3 Aircross. Among those, those most likely to get a hotter version are the Fiat 600e which could soon get the Abarth treatment, and the yet-unnamed Alfa Romeo model. Opel has also confirmed an upcoming OPC variant of the Mokka, although this could probably use its own bodywork for testing.
