Mitsubishi revealed the exterior design of a new and yet-unnamed SUV model in a special event in Indonesia, while announcing the start of pre-orders before its official premiere which is scheduled for August 10. The new model stays true to the Mitsubishi XFC concept from 2022, and is destined for ASEAN markets. Production will take place at the Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Indonesia plant, with the first deliveries scheduled to commence in November 2023.

Mitsubishi designers managed to transfer as much as 90% of the concept’s design to the production model. Changes include the smaller-diameter wheels, the conventional mirrors and door handles, the redesigned skid plates without the fancy DRLs, a new pattern for the grille, and slightly different LED graphics for the Y-shaped lighting units. Besides that, the adventurous stance and the muscular body have been carried over from the XFC.

The new model will compete in the booming compact SUV segment, measuring 4,390 mm (172.8 inches) long, 1,810 mm (71.3 inches) wide, and 1,660 mm (65.4 inches) tall. The blacked-out windows of the prototypes prevent us from looking inside and the company didn’t publish any interior shots. Still, the company promises a “spacious cabin” with “versatile storage spaces” while confirming it will get a Yamaha audio system with coaxial 2-way speakers and tweeters.

Mitsubishi didn’t reveal the detailed specifications or the name of the model, saving them for the actual debut. However, they confirmed it will come fitted with a 1.5-liter engine and a CVT gearbox sending power to the front wheels. Despite the FWD nature, the generous ground clearance of 8.7-in (222 mm) and the four available driving modes (Normal, Gravel, Mud, and Wet) will allow the SUV to be driven on rough surfaces and flooded roads. As for the powertrain, it could be the non-electrified naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter unit from the Mitsubishi Xpander which is good for 103 hp (77 kW / 105 PS) in the crossover minivan.

Comments about “New Xcitement” and the big X behind the prototypes on the exhibition floor hint at a similar naming strategy with the Xpander. The latest rumors suggest that the SUV will be called the Xforce, something that coincides with the XFC name of the concept.

We will learn everything about the new Mitsubishi model at the 2023 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) on August 10. The company already sells the similarly-sized and electrified Renault-derived Mitsubishi ASX B-SUV in Europe, so chances are that the new model will be exclusively available in ASEAN markets.
