Subaru announced a new addition to its Japanese range, called the Levorg Layback. The new variant of the wagon adopts SUV-style features and was teased prior to its debut this fall. Overall, the Levorg Layback sounds like the wagon equivalent of the Crosstrek, or a smaller alternative to the Outback.

Subaru said that the Levorg Layback was developed for the Japanese market, describing it as a “unique SUV”. The new model is based on the second generation of the Subaru Levorg which was originally introduced in 2020. However, the dark teasers reveal a number of changes, resulting in a crossover stance.

The front bumper is redesigned, featuring a wider grille and an aluminum-style trim connecting the LED headlights. We can also see the tweaked bumper intakes and a new design for the alloy wheels. Finally, there is a single shot of the interior, revealing a two-tone leather upholstery for the seats with gold stitching.

New Subaru Levorg Layback Teased As An Adventurous Wagon For Japan

The company didn’t announce the technical specifications of the model but chances are it will feature a version-specific suspension setup with an increased ground clearance improving its off-road credentials. The Levorg is already available with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system which is a fitting choice for a crossover wagon.

As for the powertrains, the regular model offers the option between two turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engines exclusively mated to a CVT gearbox – the 1.8-liter produces 174 hp (130 kW / 177 PS) while the 2.4-liter from the WRX produces 271 hp (202 kW / 275 PS). At this point, we don’t know which one will find its way under the bonnet of the Layback.

Pre-orders for the Levorg Layback will commence at Subaru dealers in Japan starting on September 7. The debut of the model is scheduled for this fall, so we will likely learn more about it in the next month or so. It remains to be seen if Subaru will keep the Layback as a Japan-only affair, since other markets would certainly be interested in a compact crossover wagon.
