Volkswagen announced a new California Concept based on the Multivan T7, celebrating 35 years since the introduction of the popular campervan nameplate. The plug-in hybrid concept will debut on August 25 at the Caravan Salon trade fair in Dusseldorf, with the production version following in 2024.
The concept appeared in an official sketch, showing its Multivan-based bodywork, pop-up roof with integrated windows, two awnings, and an equal number of sliding doors. We can also see a tablet-style touchscreen allowing the user to control the temperature, lighting, and other functions of the “smart” camper.

The model is based on the long-wheelbase version of the Multivan T7 which measures 5,173 mm (203.7 inches) long, allowing more room for activities inside. We expect the concept to come equipped with a kitchenette, a dining area, and a modular bed. More importantly, this is the first time a VW California comes fitted with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and is all thanks to the MQB underpinnings. According to VW, the PHEV system is better suited for long-distance travel while offering a zero-emission, silent driving mode, perfect for campsites.
The VW California Concept will be displayed at the Caravan Salon trade fair in Düsseldorf from August 25 to September 3. The company confirmed that the production version will be produced at the VW Commercial Vehicles plant in Hanover from 2024 onwards. The company is also working on a fully electric California based on the ID.Buzz which is set to follow in the second half of the decade.
The new concept premieres exactly 35 years after the debut of the first T3-based California at the 1988 Caravan Salon trade fair. Since then, the automaker has sold 260,000 California-branded campers, with 175,000 of them being sold since 2019. Besides the various generations of the Transporter (T3, T4, T5, and T6), VW offers California variants of the Caddy and the larger Crafter.
