If you weren’t already excited for Monterey Car Week here’s one fresh reason why you ought to be: Lamborghini will use the platform to reveal a fully electric concept car that’s a thinly disguised prototype for a 2028 production EV.

“Ever since its foundation in 1963, Automobili Lamborghini has made one-off models that signal the technical and stylistic direction the company will take in the immediate future. These are design or technical prototypes or experimentation with new concepts to help develop the Lamborghinis to come,” the company said in a statement announcing the debut. 

“In the 1960s, these one-offs were very often show cars bound for motor show parades. In just a few days at Monterey Car Week in California… Automobili Lamborghini will present the prototype of its first 100% electric car,” it continued.

And while Lamborghini didn’t provide any more information than that, or even the most useless teaser picture (we’ve used a shot of the 2014 Asterion concept as a lead image), we’re all pretty clear about what form this hint at Lambo’s fourth model will look like. It’s widely expected to take the form of a four-seat GT whose practicality tips a hat to the more touring-focused front-engined cars in the company’s 1960s and ’70s back catalogue like the Espada, as well as the stillborn 2008 Estoque sedan concept, while also taking advantage of the design opportunities that the compact and versatile packaging of an electric drivetrain affords. It should also still “look like a spaceship” judging by comments made by design boss Mitja Borkert last year.

But, this being 2023, the concept is also expected to feature a raised ground clearance that makes it more of a crossover than a straight GT. We don’t yet know if the concept will feature two or four doors – if it’s four it could effectively be an electric rival to Ferrari’s V12-powered Purosangue crossover.

Though the 2028 production version of next week’s concept will be Lamborghini’s first EV, it certainly won’t be the company’s first electrified series production car. The new Revuelto already features a plug-in powertrain, a technology that’s coming to next year’s Huracan successor and the phenomenally successful Urus SUV. Autocar reports than Lamborghini is also preparing to launch an entirely electric Urus in 2029, one year after the GT car hits the market.
