An extraordinary Ferrari LaFerrari prototype is tipped to fetch as much as $3.25 million when it crosses the auction block at Mecum’s upcoming Monterey Car Week sales event.

Ferrari built just 500 examples of the LaFerrari for customers but also built a number of prototypes during its development. Some of these prototypes have been sold in the past but this one is particularly special as it is a third-phase prototype that is visually identical to the production model.

The unique exterior of the car is painted primarily in Rosso Corsa with matte black parts including the front bumper and the expansive rear clamshell. It then has white vinyl roundels on the sides and Pirelli graphics. It is rolling on staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch wheels with the front ones finished in silver and the rear wheels bathed in satin black. Unlike some other LaFerrari prototypes, this one also features all of the same active aerodynamics as the production model.

A LaFerrari Prototype Is Perfect For The Avid Collector

There’s nothing to distinguish the interior of the car from those that reached customers. The seats are clad in bright red leather with black accents while the red of the cabin is trimmed in black Alcantara and gloss carbon fiber. The car has only been driven 16,388 km (10,183 miles) but it’s safe to assume it has been pushed quite hard. Mecum hasn’t provided a detailed ownership history of the car.

Like all production LaFerraris, the prototype is driven by the car maker’s screaming 6.3-liter naturally-aspirated V12 coupled to a hybrid KERS system that allows it to churn out 950 hp. While a Ferrari SF90 Stradale offering similar performance and a more advanced hybrid system can be purchased for much less, the LaFerrari will remain the most desirable of all modern Ferrari hypercars for many years to come.
