VW’s 2025 ID.7 wagon is clearly not the shy and retiring type because in only its second spy shot appearance, it’s already stripped off almost all of its disguise to give us a clear look at what to expect when it lands in showrooms in 2024.

In truth, although the first prototype of the electric kombi we spotted back in May was wearing some disguise, we already had a good idea of what it looked like underneath. That’s because from the B-pillars forward it’s identical to the ID.7 sedan VW revealed this spring, and the wagon variant was previewed in 2019 by the ID. Space Vizzion concept.

For its latest spy shot adventure the load-lugging ID.7 has dropped the previous prototype’s fake grille’n’vents disguise to show off its true face, which has no grille at all, just a slim light bar connecting the DRLs of the headlamp units. The lower section of the bumper has an opening shaped a bit like a squashed version of a Lexus grille and the side (presumably non-functional) intakes have a black section shaped like Volvo’s Thor hammer lights.

 VW ID.7 Wagon’s Minder Really Does Mind Us Catching It Without Disguise

The wagon is still carrying some disguise around the rear though, specifically on the C-pillar. Artfully placed and color-coded camo suggests the waistline kicks up at the base of the pillar like a Focus estate’s, but we know from the 2019 concept that the true line extends towards the rear in an almost horizontal fashion. There’s no disguise on the rear lights though, which are connected across the rear hatch, copying the look seen on leaked images of VW’s new Tiguan SUV seen earlier this week.

The dashboard of the wagon will be identical to the ID.7 sedan’s, down to its 15-inch tablet touchscreen, though on this occasion the prototype’s grumpy minders didn’t let our photographers close enough to prove it. Also likely to be carried over from the sedan will be the the battery and powertrain options. The sedan is available with 77 kWh or 86 kWh battery packs, offering a WLTP range of 382 miles (615 km) and 435 miles (700 km), although those numbers will be lower for the heavier wagon. A single motor generating 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS) and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) is currently the only sedan configuration, though dual-motor all-wheel drive versions will be added in time.
