While we patiently await Alfa Romeo’s new sub-Tonale SUV, which may or may not be called the Brennero, in the first quarter of 2024, a set of images sent to us by an anonymous reader allegedly reveals the exterior of Alfa’s new entry-level SUV. These renderings were reportedly leaked accidentally by a UX designer who was involved in the development of digital instrument cluster graphics.

In addition to showcasing the styling, these photos also provide insights into the underpinnings of the upcoming B-SUV, which will share a platform with the Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600. At first glance, the model might be confused with the similarly-sized Nissan Juke. Upon closer inspection, distinctive Alfa Romeo features become apparent, including the scudetto grille, phone-dial wheels, and Giulia-style bumper intakes. While one might speculate that this is an independent design study, the level of detail in the 3D model and the timing of the leak lead us to believe it likely originates from the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo.

Alfa Romeo’s New Baby SUV May Have Leaked Revealing Its Design And EV And ICE Options

The front end features split LED headlights positioned at the base of the sculpted bonnet. Notably, the scudetto grille is smaller than what’s typical for Alfa Romeo, creating space for a centrally-mounted license plate. From the profile view, you can make out the gentle bodywork lines and pronounced rear shoulders. Moving to the rear, a coupe-style rear glass stands out, complemented by a prominent wing and a secondary spoiler positioned above the slim LED taillights.

On the whole, it seems that the smallest Alfa Romeo model doesn’t share any exterior components with the Jeep Avenger or the Fiat 600. The only potential exceptions may be the mirror caps, windshield, and door handles. It’s worth noting that the rear door handles are integrated into the plastic pillar, a design reminiscent of the now-discontinued Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

Shared underpinnings, multiple powertrain options

Alfa Romeo’s New Baby SUV May Have Leaked Revealing Its Design And EV And ICE Options

We already know that the new Alfa Romeo will utilize the CMP/eCMP architecture, aligning it with other sub-compact SUVs and hatchbacks (B-segment in Europe) across various Stellantis brands. The allegedly leaked images of the digital instrument cluster indicate that this model will be available in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) variants. While Alfa Romeo has officially announced the B-SUV as its initial foray into full electrification, there have been no official details regarding a combustion-engine version of the model.

The ICE-powered Brennero may potentially share an electrified powertrain with the upcoming PHEV version of the Fiat 600. Alternatively, it could adopt the mild-hybrid turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine already utilized in several Peugeot and Opel models or even a non-electrified version of the same powerplant. However, it’s crucial to note that regardless of the specific powertrain choice, the combustion-engined variant will likely be phased out by 2027 as Alfa Romeo transitions to being an EV-only brand.

Regarding the electric version, it appears that it will be offered in both single-motor, front-wheel-drive (FWD), and dual-motor, all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations. One of the graphics indicates an electric range of 384 km (239 miles) with a fully charged battery, a figure similar to the WLTP rating of the Jeep Avenger. The Jeep Avenger currently features a front-mounted electric motor generating 154 hp (115 kW / 156 PS) and 260 Nm (192 lb-ft) of torque, along with a 54 kWh battery pack, consistent with the majority of EV offerings from Stellantis.

The third and smallest crossover by Alfa Romeo after the Stelvio and the Tonale will enter the ultra-competitive B-SUV segment in Europe starting in 2024. It will serve as the new entry point to the Alfa Romeo range, effectively replacing the discontinued MiTo supermini. A small electric SUV might be the exact opposite of the exotic Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, but it is likely a far more important model in terms of sales volume for the survival of the Italian brand.
