Going off-road in any SUV can prove perilous but what most don’t expect is to get stuck in a highly capable Jeep Wrangler on a paved road. That’s exactly what happened to one driver in New York and it was bystanders that had to help get him freed when he drove into an open manhole. Maybe the “CR4WL3R” graphic on his hood signified what he was going to do after the embarrassment of this whole thing.

Just imagine rolling up on this Jeep Wrangler in a parking lot. One might easily think “This person for sure goes off-road.” After all, they’ve got an LED light bar, a bull bar brush guard on the front, and what looks like an angry eyes grill too. There are rock rails, additional mounting points, and of course, that decal on the hood.

Despite all of that, it seemed that a manhole was simply too much for the Wrangler and its pilot to handle. The short video we see below kicks off with the Jeep’s front driver tire stuck deep in the hole. It’s so deep in fact that the center of the wheel is below the street itself.

After a bunch of jump cuts and what sounds like a pedestrian talking the driver through how to activate 4WD, a group surrounds the SUV. While the driver guns it in reverse, the group pushes on the Wrangler and the vehicle frees itself from whatever is living beneath the streets of NYC. The man appears genuinely thankful and the crowd is enthralled with their collective feat of strength.

All of this is in jest of course. Notably, a vehicle with smaller tires likely would’ve suffered a lot more damage in a case like this. The Jeep also likely could’ve made it out without any help at the hands of a skilled driver. Nevertheless, It also goes without saying that it’s heartwarming to see a group of strangers band together like this to help someone in need.
