The idea of a Ferrari SUV would have been unthinkable just a decade ago but here we are in 2023 with the almighty Purosangue on the market. Sure, Ferrari itself doesn’t refer to it as a SUV but we all know that’s exactly what it is and that’s no bad thing. After all, there is no other SUV on the market quite like this with a screaming, naturally aspirated V12.

The Italians are masters of the V12 and Ferrari’s decision to equip its first SUV with 12-cylinders appears to have been a masterstroke. While we are sure the Purosangue would have been welcomed into the Ferrari family by owners and enthusiasts were it fitted with the brand’s twin-turbo V6 or V8, the presence of a 6.5-liter V12 gives it an entirely new level of appeal. This clip confirms just how remarkable this engine sounds.

This clip was filmed by YouTuber FCars just outside the Ferrari facility in Maranello, Italy and shows what are likely a pair of customer-ordered cars getting a quick shakedown before heading off to their new homes. While the drivers take things relatively sedately, the unmistakable sound of the Ferrari V12 is evident with only the lightest touch of the throttle.

Ferrari has extracted 715 hp and 528 lb-ft (716 Nm) of torque from the Purosangue’s V12. That gives it a significant edge over the Lamborghini Urus Performante and Urus S, both with 657 hp, and makes us wonder if Lamborghini ever thought about building the Urus with a V12. Like Ferrari, Lamborghini produces a 6.5-liter naturally-aspirated V12, although it was recently updated to form the hybrid system of the Revuelto. It’s hard to say if there is room in the Urus’s engine bay to fit a V12 but we suspect the sensible bosses at the VW Group thought it would be far more economical to build the Urus with the same basic 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 it has in other models.
