A host of new 2023 BMW 7-Series models, including the all-electric i7, are being recalled in the United States due to a fault with the front windshield wipers.

An investigation from the car manufacturer has revealed that a change in the hardness of the material used by the wiper lever means the connection between the wiper lever and the knurled wiper motor axle could start to loosen. Over time, it could stop working entirely.

BMW notes that if the connection becomes loose, there will be a reduced amount of torque that is transferred from the wiper motor axle. This would reduce the wipers’ effectiveness during heavy loads, particularly in heavy rain or snow. Obviously, this is a hazard that could increase the risk of a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall notice reveals that 3,820 vehicles are involved. These consist of 3,569 BMW 740i and 760i xDrive models that were manufactured between October 13, 2022 and January 26, 2023, as well as 251 examples of the 2023 BMW i7 xDrive60 built between the same dates.

BMW alerted dealerships to the recall on September 20, 2023 and will start to inform owners from November 10. Dealerships will resolve the issue by simply inspecting the windshield wiper system and if necessary, replacing it.
