Lucid Motors is the latest owner of Samsung’s 255-inch monitor. Dubbed “The Wall,” the screen will help the automaker design vehicles faster, since it’s so big that it can display them at full-scale.

The Wall uses MicroLED technology to create a 255-inch display that can show vehicles in true-to-life color, Samsung says. That helps produce realistic renderings with accurately reproduced reflections and light for designers to look at and consider.

“The Wall has revolutionized the way our design and engineering teams work together,” said Jenny Ha, Lucid’s exterior design manager. “With this technology, we can effortlessly visualize design data that incorporates engineering feedback and simulation results, allowing us to promptly assess the effects of any alteration on the overall design.”

Lucid reports that it used The Wall while creating the Air Sapphire, the 1,200 hp (895 kW/1,217 PS) version of its all-electric super sedan. Capable of reaching 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than two seconds, it benefits from new wheels, a new carbon fiber lip spoiler, and a new shade of Sapphire Blue paint.

Ha says that while designing the high-performance vehicle, her team was able to work with the screen from initial concept sketches to final adjustments. The size and detail of the display allowed them to look at everything, down to the tiniest detail.

And although The Wall is the size of, well, a wall, it’s effectively a two-dimensional tool, meaning that it takes up very little floor space. That allows larger teams to operate together in workshops to refine every detail of a vehicle, making the results better, faster to finish, and less expensive.

“Development teams now operate more efficiently, and drivers can enjoy enhanced luxury aesthetics without compromising superior vehicle performance,” said Ha. “It can be a tricky sweet spot to balance, but The Wall helps us pinpoint it seamlessly.”
