Porsche 911 Recalled Over Seat Airbag That May Deploy At The Wrong Time And Hurt You

Porsche 911 owners with full bucket seats may want to drive extra carefully for the next month, as an issue with the seat-mounted airbag could cause it to deploy in accidents where it is not needed, potentially leading to injuries.

The issue impacts a variety of 992 generation 911 models, from the 2021 to 2024 model years. The specific model appears to be of less significance compared to whether the owner opted for the full bucket seat option.

Porsche first became aware that a problem might exist in 2021, when a driver at a racetrack in Thailand injured their spleen after an accident. In 2023, the company became aware of three additional incidents in Germany where drivers also experienced spleen injuries, prompting further investigation.

The automaker identified that the seat-mounted airbags had the potential to deploy in situations where they were unnecessary. This included scenarios such as a frontal collision with minimal or no lateral offset, which could result in harm to the driver rather than providing protection.

Fortunately, the fault is with the airbag deployment software, not the parts themselves. Currently, the cars are programmed to maximize seat-mounted airbag deployment, but Porsche has written new code that will only let them deploy in accidents where they are needed.

In all, 2,923 vehicles are affected by this issue in the United States. Porsche plans to start reaching out to owners on December 22, and they will be asked to return their vehicle to a dealership, where a technician will reprogram the airbag control unit free of charge.
