Tesla has had fun trolling us and other automakers with Cybertruck prototypes wrapped to resemble rivals like the Ford F1-50, but most of the trucks we’ve seen have been dressed in their familiar stainless steel garb and Tesla hasn’t confirmed that other color options will be available. So when the firm’s design boss was spotted driving a Cybertruck dressed in a matte black wrap this weekend the internet understandably went a little bit wild.

Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen was seen at a Santa Monica Teslas & Coffee event this past weekend, openly displaying the truck for everyone to see, which obviously led to speculation that Tesla will offer an optional wrap to buyers after the Cybertruck launches later this month.

That wouldn’t be a huge surprise. Not everyone is going to like the shiny steel look or driving an identical truck to everyone else, and the nature of the panels means they can’t easily be painted. On top of that, CEO Elon Musk did mention in a social media post over three years ago that customers would be able to wrap their trucks and the company already offers wraps on the Model 3 and Y. Let’s face it: Tesla might as well offer the option and make some cash, because if it doesn’t make wraps available, someone else will.

The black covering certainly changes the look of the Cybertruck, and perversely, seems to make it stand out more, though that might be simply because we’re so used to the thing in silver. What it doesn’t do is make it look any less like a terrible prop car from a straight-to-video 1980s sci-fi movie. But that’s just my opinion; beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that.

Do you think the Cybertruck looks better in this black wrap or its original silver and do you think Tesla will offer other colors?
