Canoo unveiled a new electric pickup called American Bulldog, inspired by the light tactical EV prototype that the company built for the U.S. Army last year. The new model appears to be based on the standard Canoo Pickup but features more rugged styling inside-out.

As described by Canoo, the American Bulldog “reflects the grit and resolve of the American people”, and offers “maximum functionality for work, adventure, and service”. Tony Aquila, Executive Chairman and CEO of Canoo explained the reasoning behind the name choice saying that “Like the American Bulldog, this vehicle is loyal and courageous”.

Unlike the Screaming Eagle military prototype that came with a single-cab design, the American Bulldog comes with a more practical dual-cab silhouette. The greenhouse and proportions make it instantly recognizable as a Canoo, but the bodywork and lighting units have been redesigned compared to the standard van and pickup models.

At the front, the triple LED headlights are connected with black trim pieces creating a more utilitarian look. Those are combined with off-road bumpers and skid plates. Likewise, the model gets boxier wide fender extensions and a new set of black steelies shod in mud-terrain rubber. Other cool features include the inserts on the suicide doors, the drop-down faces of the rear bed, and the rugged-looking tail with a full-width LED bar. and an integrated step.

Inside, Canoo designers added military-style bags on the door cards, orange details, and matching graphics on the infotainment display.

The company didn’t give us any details about the technical specifications of the American Bulldog which shouldn’t be that different from the standard Canoo Pickup. The new model could share the 600 hp (447 kW / 608 PS) electric powertrain and all-wheel-drive system with the Screaming Eagle prototype. Furthermore, it shares the honeycomb structure, steer-by-wire, and brake-by-wire systems with other Canoo products.

Canoo didn’t clarify whether the American Bulldog is destined for production or if it will remain a one-off. In other news, the EV startup just announced the delivery of its first Oklahoma-built electric van to the state of Oklahoma, which is set to be followed by more deliveries to “key customers and partners” before the end of the year. The standard Canoo Pickup is currently available for pre-orders, as the company is focused on ramping up production of its van sibling in 2024.
