One truck with a front wheel that fell off sparked this recall and now Ford says it’s narrowed it down to just 13 pickups

Ford just issued a new recall for 13 Super Duty trucks. Included in the recall are four different models, all from model years 2022 and 2023. These heavy-duty pickups all have a front wheel hub extender that might just fall off on its own. It’s already happened to at least one truck.
Back on October 19th, Ford started an investigation regarding one report of a truck that had a front wheel fall off. In that case, a wheel and wheel hub extender detached from a 2023 Super Duty during what Ford calls a “low-speed maneuver.” Thankfully, nobody was injured.
Ford’s investigation uncovered that axles from its supplier, Dana Incorporated, might have insufficiently torqued wheel extender retaining nuts. At the heart of the issue was a production error where incorrect torque data could be recorded despite the actual torque being insufficient. The automaker says that it can trace each affected axle to a specific truck. Models include the F-350, F-450, F-550, and F-650 from 2022 and 2023.

As Ford points out in its documentation to the NHTSA, ” A wheel assembly that separates from a vehicle while driving may create a road hazard.” It’s working on contacting owners and asking them to stop driving their vehicle in the meantime.
Owners will need to work with their local Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the truck towed to get service. A tech will inspect the hubs and replace the hub extender, the hub assembler, and the retaining nuts if they’re loose. Those who might have already noticed this issue and had it fixed need to apply for reimbursement through Ford no later than December 15th. Ford alerted dealers to the recall back on November 6th.
