The challenge (or tragedy, for some) with performance cars is that utilizing their full potential can be quite difficult. However, the owner of one 2023 Toyota GR Corolla recently showed why hot hatches are so beloved, and why finding a place to off-road one is a simple way to improve your quality of life immeasurably.

In a point-of-view video posted to The GR Panda YouTube channel, the owner of the GR Corolla takes it for a spin around some OHV trails with the approval of the local Forest Service. And it makes the car look like a riot.

Of course, pretty much any car would be a hoot around these trails, but a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that makes 300 hp (224 kW/304 PS) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque only makes it better.

A highly advanced, adjustable all-wheel-drive system helps as well. However, it’s worth noting that you have to pay close attention to notice a difference. According to the driver, who mentioned in a Reddit comment, the distinction between a 30:70 torque split and the track mode, featuring a 50:50 split, is rather subtle. The real impact becomes apparent in high-speed corners, where the former setup feels less stable.

What’s really impressive about this video is how much fun it proves the Toyota is, even with an amateur at the wheel. As Team O’Neil Rally School proved, the GR Corolla can rally with a pro behind the wheel, but a pro can flatter any car.

This video was shot by a driver who says they only learned to drive a manual less than a year ago. They also add that they weren’t trying to send it too hard, because they wanted to get home at the end of the day.

And yet, all the same, the GR Corolla provides them with a great time, and the only downside is that the finish on their rear wheels looks worse for wear. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
