Tesla’s Cybertruck has finally been revealed, and that means we have a selection of real technical details to chew over and to compare with the specifications of its electric pickup truck rivals. A base rear-wheel drive Cybertruck is coming in 2025 but for now the lineup is limited to the mid-spec AWD model and the Porsche-eating Cyberbeast.

We’ve picked the Cyberbeast for this comparison, and have pitted against its key rivals in the increasingly busy $100k electric truck segment, those being the top-spec versions of the Chevy Silverado, Ford F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer and Rivian R1T.

You’ve probably already heard that the production Cybertruck delivers a lot less than was originally promised in many areas. The $60,990 base model coming in 2025 is $21k more expensive than targeted, and the top-spec, tri-motor Cyberbeasts has had its 500-mile (805 km) range slashed to 440 miles (708 km) – and only achieves that when you option an extra battery that sets into bed space. And to cap it all, the 14,000 lbs (6,350 kg) towing capacity touted in 2019 now stands at 11,000 lbs (5,000 kg).

On the flip side, the composite bed’s 2,500 lbs (1,130 kg) max payload is almost twice as big as the GMC Hummer’s and the 845 hp (857 PS) Cyberbeast model’s outrageous 2.6-second zero to 60 mph (97 kmh) time is genuinely supercar-quick. With that in mind, it’s actually competitively-priced, and the crazy styling plus interesting technical details (bulletproof stainless skin, steer-by wire) mean it’s the most exciting thing to happen to trucks for years.

2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum

FORD F-150 LIGHTNING PLATINUM
› Price: $91,995
› 0-60mph: under 4 seconds
› Power: 580 hp
› Drive: dual-motor, AWD
› Range: 300 miles
› Payload: 1,952 lbs

› Towing: 8,500 lbs (with tow package)

The Cybertruck’s most obvious rival has also been hit with big prices to cover a massive increase in material costs, but it is still possible to buy a base Ford F-150 Lightning for less than $50k, or a mid-spec version with AWD and a useful 320-mile (515 km) range for less than the $70k Tesla wants for the entry-level, RWD, Cybertruck coming in 2025. The F-150 EV’s sensible looks will also appeal to some buyers, and everyone can appreciate the generous payload capacity and a huge frunk that’s twice as big as the Tesla’s.

Where the case for the Lightning falls apart is at the upper end of the lineup. The Platinum-grade flagship costs $91,995, meaning it’s not much cheaper than the Cyberbeast, but it’s way down on power because it gets the same 580 hp (588 PS) powertrain as the mid-spec Lightning XLT priced $22k below it in the range. Platinum versions also lose out on the XLT/Lariat’s 10,000 lbs (4,540 kg) tow rating and lose 20 miles (32 km) of range.

2024 CHEVROLET SILVERADO EV RST

CHEVROLET SILVERADO RST
› Price: $105,000 RST First Edition
› 0-60mph: under 4.5 seconds
› Power: 754 hp
› Drive: dual-motor, AWD
› Range: 400 miles (est)
› Payload: 1,300 lbs
› Towing: 10,000 lbs

Turned off by the Cyberbeast’s polarizing design (and CEO), but want a bit more zip and visual punch than the Lightning delivers? Then check out the new Chevrolet Silverado EV – specifically the range-topping RST – or its GMC Sierra twin. Both are built on GM’s Ultium platform and Chevy says the RST can stretch a charge to around 400 miles (644 km) and add 100 miles (161 km) of range in just 10 minutes thanks to blazing-fast 350 kW charging capability. Chevy also says the RST can get to 60 mph (97 kmh) in 4.5 seconds, which seems very conservative given the 754 hp (765 PS) power output and Ford’s sub-4-second claim for the much less potent Lightning.

Like the F-150, the Silverado is only available as a crew cab and has a huge frunk, but the Chevy also offer’s a clever mid-gate function to allow loads too long for the 6-ft (1,800 mm) bed to pass through into the cabin. However, a 1,300 lbs (590 kg) payload rating is much worse than the F-150’s and Cybertruck’s, and at $105,000 for the First Edition, the RST also looks expensive next to the much faster Tesla.

2024 GMC Hummer EV 3X

GMC HUMMER EV 3X
› Price: $104,650
› 0-60mph: 3.0 seconds
› Power: 1,000 hp
› Drive: tri-motor, AWD
› Range: 381 miles
› Payload: 8,500 lbs

Towing: 1,300 lbs

Recipient of the most unlikely comeback ever award, the reincarnated Hummer is built off the same Ultium platform as the Silverado and Sierra EVs but feels like a Pixar caricature of those trucks. Instead of the two motors in the top-spec Silverado RST you get three that delivers a nice round 1,000 hp (and a less round 1,017 PS). And despite a gargantuan curb weight of up to 9,000 lbs (4,080 kg), the 3X can get to 60 mph (97 kmh) in just 3 seconds.

Review: The 1,000 HP GMC Hummer EV Pickup Is Wonderfully Ridiculous

It can also do cool stuff like drive diagonally, courtesy of its Crabwalk feature, but for all its ‘ultimate truck’ posturing, the Hummer is a pretty poor pickup. It has a fairly unimpressive 8,500 lbs (3,860 kg) tow rating and its 5-ft (1,520 mm) bed is shorter than than some rivals’.

2024 Rivian R1T Quad-Motor

RIVIAN R1T QUAD-MOTOR
› Price: $87,000
› 0-60mph: 3.0 seconds
› Power: 835 hp
› Drive: quad-motor, AWD
› Range: 328 miles
› Payload: 1,764 lbs
› Towing: 11,000 lbs

The R1T’s distinctive front-end styling means the otherwise conventionally-styled Rivian stands out from the truck crowd without looking Tesla-weird, but its real USP is the available quad-motor drivetrain whose 3.0-second zero to 60 mph (97 kmh) time made it the fastest truck on the block until the tri-motor Cyberbeast was launched.

Tesla’s truck has the Rivian licked for range and payload, but the R1T’s 11,0000 lbs (4,990 kg) towing capacity matches the Cybertruck’s and is the best here besides the Ram 1500 REV’s (see below). One major surprise is how comparatively affordable the $87,000 top-dog R1T looks next to its rivals considering it’s widely viewed as an expensive truck.

2025 RAM 1500 REV

RAM 1500 REV
› Price: $95,000 (est, for top trim)
› 0-60mph: 4.4 seconds (est)
› Power: 654 hp
› Drive: dual-motor, AWD
› Range: 500 miles (with opt battery)
› Payload: 2,700 lbs
› Towing: 14,000 lbs

You’ve probably noticed there are a few ‘estimate’ caveats next to the data in the box above. That’s because although Ram revealed the 1500 REV at the beginning of 2023, it doesn’t go on sale until the end of 2024 so there’s plenty we still don’t know about it.

But what we do know makes it soundworth waiting for. Just look at the range, towing and payload figures: no other truck here can touch the Ram’s numbers. And though Ram has so far only revealed one power figure of 654 hp (663 PS), it has confirmed that multiple configurations will be available, and you just know that there will be a version putting out a heap more ponies along soon.
