The heightened risk of fire has prompted BMW to issue a recall for certain 2024 4-Series Convertible models sold in the United States. While the repairs will be carried out free of charge, it’s bad news for customers.

BMW first noticed a potential problem on October 5, 2023, when a quality assurance test after engine assembly revealed a small oil leak at the cylinder head cover. The supplier of the cylinder head cover suggested that a production process issue was the cause of the fault and a decision to issue a recall was made on December 13.

The carmaker notes that an anomaly may have occurred in the injection molding process that could cause unwanted variations in the wall thickness of the cylinder head cover. Consequently, hairline cracks could form in the cover, and over time, this could lead to unwanted vibrations and heat, potentially leading to engine oil leaking into the engine compartment.

Five 2024 BMW 4-Series Convertibles Could Catch Fire In The U.S.

Just 5 examples of the 2024 4-Series Convertible are impacted, all of which were built between October 10, 2023, and October 11, 2023. BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.

Dealers were alerted to the recall on December 20, 2023, while owners will be informed via first-class mail from February 9. BMW believes that each of the five cars involved in the recall suffers from the cylinder head cover fault and as such, all will have the covers replaced.

In early December, BMW was forced to issue a recall for several hundred X3, X4, and X5 models in the United States because they had Takata airbag inflators that could rupture. Six weeks earlier, BMW recalled more than 9,000 7-Series and 5-Series models because the driver-assistance system could function without requiring drivers to keep their hands on the wheel.
