Waking up on New Year’s Day can be a bit rough for some folks, but imagine the shock of homeowners when they realized that a car had driven through their home at around 2:25 a.m, January 1st. The accident happened in Mountain Brook, Alabama and police are still sorting out the details. The driver survived but his record might not end up so fortunate.
The crash happened in the 700 block of Euclid Avenue in the Crestline community of Mountain Brook. Authorities say that the Tesla left the roadway, smashed into the house, and ended up having enough energy to come out of an adjacent wall. Thankfully, nobody inside the home was injured as the occupants were on the other side of the building.

However, the driver was trapped inside of the electric sedan. Emergency workers were able to extricate the man, reportedly 24, and transfer him to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Police say that speed was likely a factor in the crash, but stopped short of blaming the situation on drugs or alcohol for the time being. Interestingly, authorities haven’t announced any charges against the driver at this time either.
The investigation is ongoing according to AL.com so further details could come out in the near future. No doubt, authorities will consider vehicle data logs which should give them a clearer picture of what the driver was doing just prior to the crash. Considering how bad the damage to both the house and the car is, it’s somewhat miraculous that nobody sustained serious injuries during the accident.
While the car is tough to identify, it looks like an older Model S, a car that somewhat famously “broke” a crash testing machine at the NHTSA. That sort of robust safety structure certainly played a role in the driver surviving this gnarly crash.
