Chevrolet’s electric revolution is kicking into high-gear as the Blazer EV will soon be followed by the Equinox EV. With that in mind, we’re looking at how the crossovers compare to one another, although we don’t have full details at this point.

That being said, the biggest difference is price as the Equinox EV will begin at $34,995. This makes it far more affordable than the Blazer EV, which currently begins at $56,715 in 2LT AWD guise. However, a front-wheel drive variant will be added to the lineup shortly and this will presumably be even cheaper.

Price isn’t the only thing that separates them as the Equinox EV is a compact crossover that has a 116.3 inch (2,954 mm) wheelbase. That means it’s significantly smaller than the mid-size Blazer EV, which has 121.8 inches (3,094 mm) between the wheels.

Despite residing in different segments, the two crossovers have similar cargo capacities as the Equinox EV can hold up to 57.2 cubic feet (1,620 liters) of luggage. That’s slightly less than the Blazer EV, which has 59.8 cubic feet (1,693 liters) of cargo space.

The similarities don’t end there as both models come standard with an 11-inch digital instrument cluster and a 17.7-inch infotainment system with Google built-in. Both models also offer Super Cruise and a host of standard driver assistance systems.

Power To The People

Where the crossovers really diverge is powertrains as the Equinox EV will be offered with front- and all-wheel drive. The former has an estimated 213 hp (159 kW / 216 PS) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque, while the latter boasts 288 hp (215 kW / 292 PS) and 346 lb-ft (469 Nm).

The Blazer EV is more interesting as it offers front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive. The company hasn’t said much about the front-wheel drive variant, but the all-wheel drive model has 288 hp (215 kW / 292 PS) and 333 lb-ft (451 Nm) of torque. The rear-wheel drive variant packs 340 hp (254 kW / 345 PS) and 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque, while the range-topping SS will have 557 hp (415 kW / 565 PS) and 648 lb-ft (878 Nm).

While the Blazer wins the performance battle, the front-wheel drive Equinox has an EPA range of 319 miles (513 km). That bests the 279 miles (449 km) achieved by the all-wheel drive Blazer, but it falls short of the 324 miles (521 km) posted by the rear-wheel drive variant.

When it comes time to charge, the Equinox EV has a DC fast-charging capability of up to 150 kW. This means the model can get approximately 70 miles (113 km) of range in 10 minutes.

That’s virtually identical to Blazers equipped with the 85 kWh battery, which also maxes out at 150 kW and gets around 69 miles (111 km) of range in the same time. Blazers outfitted with the 102 kWh battery have an increased DC fast-charging capability of 190 kW and this gives them approximately 78 miles (126 km) of range in ten minutes.

Both models come with an 11.5 kW Level 2 charging capability and this allows the Equinox EV to get up to 34 miles (55 km) of range per hour. However, the Equinox EV 3RS AWD will be offered with an increased capacity of 19.2 kW and this will enable it to get 51 miles (82 km) of electric range per hour.

Chevrolet hasn’t said much about the Blazer’s Level 2 charging capabilities, but has previously stated the model can get up to 24 miles (39 km) of range per hour. However, that figure appears to be based on the Dual Level Charge Cord, which maxes out at 7.7 kW.

Another thing worth mentioning is that both models can only tow up to 1,500 lbs (680 kg). That’s disappointing and rivals are far more capable in that regard.

Putting specifications aside, Chevrolet officials told us the Blazer EV and Equinox EV will appeal to different consumers. The latter is expected to be popular in the middle of the country as the company believes shoppers will be won over by its “performance and styling.” The Equinox EV, on the other hand, is a “functional and affordable” crossover that is expected to be popular on the East and West Coast.
