Kia used CES to introduce an assortment of concepts and its Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy. They’re already looking like winners as the automaker has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Uber, which will see the two companies collaborate on the development and deployment of PBVs.
The terms of the deal weren’t released, but the companies will work together to identify “optimal specifications for PBV models.” Kia went on to suggest these vehicles could have technologies and services that “benefit drivers and ride hailing users alike.”
While nothing is set in stone, the automaker hinted at a unique rear passenger compartment with dedicated climate and audio controls as well as an interactive rear-seat entertainment system. This would make Ubers far more appealing as they’d be like traveling in first class instead of coach.

Kia went on to say the partnership will see the creation of proofs of concept, prototypes, and road-going models “tailored to the needs of drivers that use the Uber platform.” The companies will also work to keep ownership costs affordable. As part of this effort, Kia floated the potential for a Battery as a Service subscription, which would lower the initial purchase price.
Kia America CEO SeungKyu Yoon said “PBVs will play a key role in the customization of mobility, and by partnering with Uber, Kia aims to deliver industry-leading technology with advanced software and services to enhance the ride hailing experience.”
We’ll likely get a better idea of what to expect in the coming years, but Kia’s PBV business will be launched in 2025 with the PV5. There will be an assortment of variants including High Roof, Van, Pickup, and Robotaxi versions.
Besides announcing the PBV partnership, the companies are expanding their Kia Flex collaboration which is already in effect in several states. As the automaker explained, it offers Uber drivers a “comprehensive vehicle package, including EV options, insurance, and maintenance.”
