Stellantis is extending the implementation of mild-hybrid technology to additional existing models. The Citroen C4 and C4 X are the latest to receive this upgrade, introducing a new “Hybrid 136” trim that aligns with the enhancements seen in the larger C5 Aircross.

The new mildly electrified turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder powertrain is an evolution of the widely-used 1.2 PureTech, although Stellantis claims that 40 percent of its parts are new. A small permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor is integrated within the casing of the new six-speed automatic gearbox (e-DCS6), together with the inverter and the ECU. Energy is sourced from a 48V lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 432 Wh which is mounted under the driver’s seat and charges via regenerative braking.

The electric motor produces up to 28 hp (21 kW / 29 PS) and 55 Nm (40.6 lb-ft) of torque, but it can only contribute 12 hp (9 kW / 12 PS) towards acceleration. Thankfully, the gasoline-fueled 1.2 PureTech is good for 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) and 230 Nm (170 lb-ft) of torque. Even though this is a mild hybrid setup, Citroen claims that the C4 and C4 X can drive in electric mode for up to 50% of the time in urban areas. As a result, they burn 20 percent less fuel compared to the non-electrified 1.2 PureTech 130 EAT8 versions, while emitting 20 percent less CO2 (107g/100km in the WLTP mixed cycle)

The compact crossover and its fastback twin were introduced in 2020 and 2022 respectively and continue without any visual upgrades. This is the first time they are fitted with mild-hybrid 48V technology under the hood, expanding the powertrain lineup next to the existing gasoline, diesel, and fully electric options. According to the French automaker, the EVs represent 25 percent of C4 sales and 35 percent of C4 X sales in Europe, showing that buyers are fond of electrification – at least concerning this particular model.

The new versions of the C4 and C4 X are already available to order, with the first deliveries expected in spring 2024. The Citroen C4 Hybrid 136 has a starting price of €33,200 ($35,919), which increases to €33,900 ($36,676) for the equivalent trim of the longer and more spacious C4 X.

Besides the Citroen C4, C4 X, and C5 Aircross with the Hybrid 136 moniker, the same mild-hybrid unit is available in a growing number of models from Peugeot (208, 3008, 5008), and Opel (Corsa, Mokka). It is also expected to find its way into the next generation of the Opel Crossland and Citroen C3 Aircross siblings coming in 2024, as well as in the new Lancia Ypsilon supermini.
