Jeep’s baby Avenger was significant for being the brand’s first-ever EV when it launched last year, but because it only sent its power to the front wheels (as did the combustion version added later that year) it wasn’t ‘Jeep’ enough for some fans. Maybe the 4xe will fix that.

The new mild-hybrid version of the smallest SUV in Jeep’s lineup combines a 134 hp (136 PS) four-cylinder petrol engine with a 28 hp (29 PS) electric motor at the front and a second same-sized electric motor at the back axle. That setup brings all-wheel drive to the Avenger for the first time and gives the model something of a USP. Most small SUVs sold in Europe don’t have an AWD option.

The petrol engine drives the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission but isn’t mechanically connected to the rear wheels, which are driven only by electric power. Though it’s not a PHEV and the electric motors are relatively small, Jeep says the 4xe is capable of driving in full electric power at low speeds.

Hybrid Jeep Avenger 4XE Brings AWD To Europe’s Baby SUV
Jeep showed this 4xe concept at Paris in September 2022

Jeep showed a concept version of the 4xe at the Paris Motor Show in 2022 and the single teaser rendering it’s released of the production car today suggests much of the concept’s rugged looks remain intact. The sketch reveals a new design of the front bumper, just like the concept’s plus flashes of green and matte hood treatment, chunky tires, and a raised ride height, all of which will help the AWD model stand out from the other Avengers.

The order book opens in Europe at the end of 2024 and will add some real breadth to the Avenger lineup. Until then, the choice comes down to a pair of 1.2-liter, 99 hp (100 PS) petrols, one with mild-hybrid tech, or an EV powertrain that makes 154 hp (156 PS) and gives a WLTP range of 248 miles (399 km).
