Korean automaker KG Mobility, formerly known as SsangYong before it decided to spice things up with a new name, teased a new SUV bearing a strong resemblance to a sleeker Torres. There’s speculation that it’s the upcoming Torres Coupe, poised to make its debut in mid-2024 as part of KG Mobility’s fresh lineup.

The new model takes center stage in a humorous video featuring KG Mobility vehicles joyfully celebrating a goal by the Korean national soccer team. It’s parked alongside the ICE-powered Torres, the fully electric Torres EVX, and the O100 pickup concept, offering a direct comparison. The blacked-out windows suggest this might be a prototype, although the exterior design appears production-ready and is likely to be carried over to the final version.

The SUV embraces KG Mobility’s latest styling cues while incorporating nods to existing offerings from other automakers. It shares components such as the front fenders, doors, greenhouse, mirrors, and hood with the Torres and the Torres EVX, but the remaining bodywork is distinctive. Notable features include a fresh lighting signature with split headlights and taillights, along with a lengthened and more sloped rear glass in the redesigned tail section.

To us, the front bumper intakes and rear design bear resemblance to the Range Rover Sport, while the bi-tone alloy wheels and profile surfacing evoke Hyundai vibes. In another brief teaser, KG Mobility hints that the parallel lines on the illuminated grille and LED graphics reference the “wheel, car, road, and crosswalk.”

The model is dubbed J120, reminiscent of the J100 designation for the Torres. These SUVs are anticipated to share the same architecture, accommodating both internal combustion and fully electric powertrains. Additionally, KG Mobility may introduce a hybrid variant in the future, broadening its lineup.

The public debut of the KG Mobility Torres Coupe might happen at the 2024 Busan Motor Show in June. However, a digital reveal could take place earlier than that, as part of the celebrations for SsangYong’s 70th anniversary in March 2024. Besides the Torres Coupe, we expect KG Mobility to unveil the production versions of the O100 pickup, the KR10 mid-size SUV, and the futuristic F100 SUV, all shown in concept form last year.
