Back in January, Ford told us that the new 2024 Mustang Mach-E GT would be its fastest ever EV, but didn’t share many details about how or why. Now, the Blue Oval has unveiled that software upgrades and a newly developed in-house motor are responsible for the performance gains, among other advancements.

Donna Dickson, the chief engineer for the electric crossover, disclosed that the new rear motor is lighter than its predecessor while delivering increased torque. Additionally, it is now a standard feature across all trims for the 2024 model year.

Furthermore, with the implementation of new thermal modeling and control algorithms, Ford can offer a “Performance Upgrade” for the crossover which grants Mustang Mach-E GT owners access to an additional 100 lb-ft (136 Nm) of torque.

This enables the EV to achieve a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time of just 3.3 seconds, which Ford points out is faster than both the Tesla Model Y Performance and the base Porsche Macan 4 Electric. Moreover, it can complete the quarter-mile in 11.8 seconds at 114 mph (183 km/h).

Since the enhancements provided by the Performance Upgrade are entirely digital, this option can be selected at the time of purchase or added to the vehicle later on. This flexibility allows drivers to opt for additional torque whenever they desire, providing an adaptable and customizable driving experience.

Improved range and faster charging times

Ford engineers have also enhanced the performance of the Mustang Mach-E’s batteries, enabling the vehicle to achieve greater range and faster charging times. At a DC fast charging station, the crossover’s batteries recharge 20 percent faster. This improvement translates to extended-range battery models requiring only 36.2 minutes to go from 10 to 80 percent state of charge, which is about 8.8 minutes faster than before.

Similarly, vehicles equipped with the standard-range battery now need only 32.2 minutes of charging time to reach the same state of charge, representing a 5.7-minute improvement.

When the batteries are charged to 100 percent, the Mustang Mach-E Premium with rear-wheel drive and the extended-range battery, can go up to 320 miles (515 km), per the EPA, or 20 miles (32 km) more than it could before.

The Mustang Mach-E Select, with the standard battery and rear-wheel drive, gets the same range improvement of 20 miles (32 km), and it can go up to 250 miles (402 km) per charge in 2024. Meanwhile, the GT trim improves by just 10 miles (16 km), and its range tops out at 280 miles (451 km), while the new Mustang Mach-E Rally has a range of 265 miles (426 km).

2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E Charges Faster, Has More Range And Packs More Power

For 2024, the Mustang Mach-E range starts with the Select trim, which has a base price of $41,890 (all price include $1,895 destination charge). Prices for the premium start at $45,890, while the longest-range model (Premium, Extended Range, RWD) starts at $48,890.

The Mustang Mach-E GT starts at $55,890, and it now gets standard performance seats, MagneRide damping, and Brembo brakes, which were previously only included on the GT Performance trim. The optional Performance Upgrade costs $995 as a standalone option, but is available for $745 when bundled with the $1,995 Bronze Appearance Package. Finally, prices for the Mustang Mach-E Rally start at $61,890.
