  • Photos of a Porsche Carrera GT that left the road and ended up in a tree have emerged online.
  • The images of the aftermath show that the front right corner of the car suffered damage.
  • It’s not clear why the crash happened, but the Carrera GT has a reputation for being a handful to drive.

There are cars that inspire universal adoration among enthusiasts. Then there’s the Porsche Carrera GT, a car so desirable most gearheads would consider parting with a kidney to own one. So, it stings a little (or maybe a lot) to see one of these iconic V10 beasts end up totaled, which is exactly what transpired over the weekend in Northern California.

Few details have emerged about this accident that was shared on Instagram by user Carjnl, but it appears to have occurred on Sunday, April 28, after a silver Carrera GT left the road. It remains unclear if another vehicle was involved in the incident or if the Porsche’s driver simply lost control.

The way the Porsche ended up nose-first in the tree, coupled with the apparent lack of damage to the rear end, suggests that the rare German supercar may have understeered off the road. However, the limited information available makes it difficult to determine with certainty. Unfortunately, the condition of the driver is unknown, but we wish them well.

To be sure, the Carrera GT has a bit of a reputation as a widow maker, and actor Paul Walker was in the passenger seat of one during the accident that took his life. Jay Leno also had a frightening incident in the car, losing control at a racetrack, though his spin didn’t end in tragedy, luckily.

Whatever caused this latest incident in Northern California, it’s evident that this supercar demands respect. It is powered by a mid-mounted, 5.7-liter, naturally-aspirated V10 engine, producing 605 horsepower (451 kW / 613 PS) and 435 lb-ft (590 Nm) of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels. With few driver aids available to rein it all in, the Carrera GT requires skill and caution to handle effectively.

The rawness of the experience has made the Carrera GT quite sought after in the enthusiast community, with prices for low-mileage examples of the supercar regularly running into the millions.
