  • A Ford F-150 Raptor was the victim of an ‘exploding’ fire hydrant.
  • Water pressure up to 100 psi pummeled the side of the truck for several seconds.
  • Despite the barrage, the pickup survived largely unscathed.

Fire hydrants are silent saviors that one hopes never need usage. At the same time, they’re maintained over time to ensure that they’re always ready to go. When one failed in Nevada it ended up directing a seriously high-pressure jet of water into the driver’s side door of a Ford F-150 Raptor from close range. The results prove impressive for the pickup.

Water is one of the most powerful forces on Earth. Consistent water pressure can do everything from creating canyons to cutting car parts. Fire hydrants produce between 40 and 100 psi depending on various factors. The stream they produce isn’t pin-point sized either so the force and power on display here is serious.

For an unknown reason, a hydrant failed and it was all caught on a home security camera. What starts out as a tame stream turns into something that a geyser would be jealous of. It absolutely batters the side of the blue F-150 Raptor for at least half of a minute. The force is audible and there’s clear reason for concern about the side of the aluminum door panel.

After the torrent, the owner posted an update showing just how destructive the experience was for the Ford. Perhaps surprisingly, the door has a very slight dent but is otherwise undamaged from a car length or more away. Get up closer and it’s clear that some of the landscaping rock between the hydrant and the truck ended up leaving some paint chips. The poster surmises that perhaps the weather stripping is damaged too.

“In conclusion, the Raptor came out of it with minimal damage, but there is damage. The driver side doors will need to be repaired. It could have been worse,” said the owner in a social media posting. Frankly, if this truck drove by in traffic, most people probably wouldn’t even notice.
