A production issue may mean that the driver airbags in some Cadillac XT5s could have holes in them

Crashes are always scary, but the possibility that one of the most important safety features in modern vehicles, the airbag, might fail, makes a collision all the more frightening. That’s exactly what might occur in a small number of Cadillac XT5s, so General Motors is trying to recall the vehicles before the safety issue affects any customers.
GM is recalling 74 Cadillac XT5s produced between February 16 and February 26, 2024, because they may have been equipped with a faulty airbag. The automaker first became aware of the issue on February 23, when its supplier, Joyson Safety Systems, contacted it with some alarming information.

The airbag manufacturer noticed a cushion tear during a lot-acceptance test, and stopped shipping parts to conduct additional evaluations. Ultimately, it was determined that a design change affecting parts during a very short production period could cause small holes or tears in the bag, degrading its efficacy during a deployment.
Now, GM has decided to issue a recall and a stop sale on the 74 Cadillac XT5s that were equipped with driver-side airbags from the faulty lot. If the component tears in a collision, it could put the vehicle occupant at increased risk of suffering an injury.
Fortunately, the automaker is not yet aware of any field incidents or injuries related to this concern. It plans to start reaching out to owners on June 17, and will ask them to return their vehicles to a nearby dealer, where the faulty airbag will be replaced with a new one.
The service will be completed at no cost to the owner. XT5 owners who are concerned about driving a vehicle with a faulty airbag can request courtesy transportation from GM.
