2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Updated With Bigger Battery And Cool Video-Based Digital Mirrors In Europe

Hyundai is already updating the all-electric Ioniq 5 for European customers adding nifty new features highlighted by a bigger battery. A 77.4 kWh battery pack that should provide a greater range, and digital mirrors promising better visibility.

The biggest change will happen in the battery department, where Hyundai will now sell Europeans an Ioniq 5 with a 77.4 kWh pack. Although it hasn’t yet been tested by regulators there, the battery is available in other markets, such as North America, where in SE trim is rated at 303 miles (488 km) of range per charge. The WLTP test cycle tends to be a little more generous than the EPA, though, so that number could rise depending on how the vehicle is configured. The 58 kWh battery pack will continue to be offered in the U.K.

Regardless of what battery option customers go for, it should become a little bit faster-charging thanks to a new battery conditioning feature that works while the vehicle is on the move. The system collaborates with the navigation system and, when the driver asks to be directed to a charging station, it starts managing the battery’s temperature to ensure it arrives ready to charge as fast as possible. It also guarantees improved real-life charging performance in cold weather, the automaker promises.

Moreover, European customers will now be able to buy an Ioniq 5 that provides them with a digital video feed of what’s going on behind them. Offered for both the center mirror and the side mirrors, the option guarantees that drivers can see behind them no matter how tightly packed the vehicle is.

The digital side mirrors, meanwhile, reduce air resistance and provide a clear view of what’s behind the driver even in inclement weather. The feature was already available to Korean customers but this is the first time Hyundai has offered the option on any vehicle in Europe.

Hyundai is also adding a new Smart Frequency Damper (SFD) to improve the response of the front and rear suspension and enhance the comfort of the occupants inside the vehicle. The automaker is also giving customers a few new aesthetic options. These include non-painted, black bumpers with black brightwork, as well as projection LED lighting, should they desire it.

The mildly updated 2023 Ioniq 5 will be available to customers in continental Europe in the second half of 2022 and in the late spring in the U.K. Prices have yet to be announced.
