TL;DR
- Oppo has announced a three-year strategic partnership with camera-maker Hasselblad.
- The upcoming Find X flagship will be the first to bear the fruits of the collaboration.
- The two brands will focus on improving the color science on Oppo’s phones.
Last year, OnePlus joined forces with Hasselblad to improve the camera performance of the OnePlus 9 Pro. We saw that partnership continue this year on the OnePlus 10 Pro, which also features imaging software tuned by Hasselblad. Now, Oppo has also announced a three-year strategic collaboration with the Swedish camera maker. According to Oppo, the two brands will focus on enhancing the color science on its Find X flagship phones.
The upcoming Find X5 series will be the first to bear the fruits of the partnership. We’re guessing the tie-up will be limited to the top-tier Find X5 Pro and not the rumored vanilla Find X5 or Find X5 Lite.
Oppo didn’t go into details but said it’ll leverage Hasselblad’s color calibration tech to bring the most natural skin tones possible in portrait photography. You can also expect software features similar to what we’ve seen from the OnePlus-Hasselblad partnership. For instance, the OnePlus 10 Pro houses a Hasselblad Pro Mode that combines the benefits of shooting in RAW with the phone’s computational photography smarts.
“Following the success of OnePlus and Hasselblad’s collaboration in the past year, we are very pleased to see the partnership enter a new stage of development, giving more users around the world a chance to enjoy the legendary Hasselblad mobile imaging experience,” said Pete Lau, Chief Product Officer at Oppo.
The company is also hyping up its first self-developed Neural Processing Unit (NPU) — the MariSilicon X — expected to debut with the Find X5 series. The custom imaging chip was unveiled last year and promises speedy AI processing of pictures and videos. Together with its latest camera partnership, it’ll be interesting to see how the Find X5 series fares when it comes to mobile photography.
