TL;DR

  • New Jersey authorities are warning of a new phishing attempt.
  • The scam targets T-Mobile customers and cannot be blocked.

Bad actors are targeting T-Mobile with a new phishing scam that appears to be unblockable at the moment.

It seems the scammers send the phishing attempt via a group text, making it nearly impossible to effectively block with default messaging options. According to NJCCIC, some customers have reported receiving dozens of scam texts per day. Since T-Mobile customers are being specifically targeted, it’s likely the scammers are using data obtained from one of several data breaches T-Mobile has experienced in recent years.

Phishing scams work by tricking individuals into doing something harmful with seemingly legitimate texts or emails. Since there is no easy way to block this particular phishing attempt, users should simply delete and ignore any such messages.
