TL;DR

  • A Wireless Power Consortium filing for the Google Pixel Buds Pro confirms they will have wireless charging.
  • The Buds Pro will charge at 2.5W, or half that of the Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds.
  • This is the same speed as the 2020 second-gen Pixel Buds.

At Google I/O 2022, Google had a few surprising hardware announcements. Not only did it launch the expected Google Pixel 6a, but it also pre-announced several other products.

One of those products was the Google Pixel Buds Pro. As detailed on stage, the Pixel Buds Pro will feature the basic design language and features of other Pixel Buds but incorporate new features, such as active noise-cancellation.

One thing Google didn’t describe in detail, though, was wireless charging information for the new Buds Pro. Thanks to a filing with the Wireless Power Consortium (h/t 9to5Google), we can now confirm that they will definitely charge wirelessly. We can also confirm the charging speed: 2.5W.

Now, that number might seem quite low compared to a smartphone, which can usually get about 15W. However, Apple’s industry-defining AirPods Pro can only get 1.7W of speed. The best speeds we’ve seen for true-wireless earbuds are the best-in-class Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds, which see a 5W charging speed.

In other words, the Google Pixel Buds Pro won’t set any wireless charging speed records, but they will be up to par with the competition.

You’ll be able to pre-order the Pixel Buds Pro on July 21 with general sales beginning on July 28. They’ll set you back $199.
