VW ID. Buzz Rides Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Coattails In New Spot

Of all the ads that feature a beloved character and a retro electric vehicle, this is certainly one of them. Volkswagen announced today that it will be working with Disney on a new campaign that seeks to cash in on some of the goodwill from the Star Wars franchise.

The automaker will place its upcoming ID. Buzz electric van in a series of new ads for both it and the new Disney+ series, “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” The two massive conglomerates are really getting together to show off their nostalgia machines.

Or, as Klaus Zellmer, VW’s head of sales, puts it, “We are uniting two strong global brands in this collaboration and generations of fans who grew up with their respective icons. We are really thrilled with this unique joint creative collaboration.”

Together with Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic, the teams have put together an ad to spotlight their new releases.

“By joining forces we will have the opportunity to engage new target groups in regards to e-mobility, innovation, and digitalization,” said Zellmer. “In this respect, we are really thrilled to work together with some of the best creative teams in the movie industry.”

The campaign will run in several markets around the world and will include billboards, social media stuff, and videos that feature Star Wars characters and Ewen McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

“I have been a Volkswagen enthusiast for all my life. Since I had my first Volkswagen when I was 16 years old. And I have collected them ever since,” said Ewan McGregor. “The ID. Buzz has really got character. That is unusual for a new car and it puts a smile on my face. I think it is a really happy car.”

Perhaps most intriguingly for automotive enthusiasts, Volkswagen and Lucasfilm have partnered to create a “Star Wars Edition” ID. Buzz that will be unveiled at the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California, which runs between May 26 and 29.
