This 1993 Rover Sterling Might Have Belonged To Queen Elizabeth II And It Can Now Be Yours

The Queen of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee and a 1993 Rover Sterling 2.7, which may be associated with her, is now being sold through Car & Classic.

The car itself is in excellent condition and a fine example of the breed but its true appeal is the possible connection to Queen Elizabeth II. Although there is no official paperwork linking it directly to her, there are some hints that suggest this might have been her car.

Supplied new in 1993 by Thomas Day Motors of Fleet, the business was one of an approved list of car suppliers for the Royal Estate. First registered as L464 BPE, the Rover Sterling’s owner was officially listed as “Buckingham Palace.”

Normally, vehicles being sent to the Royal Estate have their owners listed. More to the point, in the past, vehicles belonging to the Queen have been listed as belonging to “Buckingham Palace.” In addition, when this car was handed on to its second owner just a year later it was noted that it had “one previous lady owner.”

Beyond its possible royal connection, the Rover has had a pretty cushy life. The seller remarks that the British Racing Green paint, the glasswork, door surrounds, rubber, alloy wheels, and fittings are all in excellent condition. The 2.7-liter V6 engine, the transmission, and the brakes have all also been taken care of, while the car was kept in temperature-controlled storage.

“Even if there was no Royal connection at all, the original, excellent overall condition of this Rover would be of interest to the classic car connoisseur,” says Car & Classic Head of Editorial Chris Pollitt. “British modern classics of the ‘90s are, in general, enjoying a deserved renaissance, but this particular 1993 Rover Sterling strikes a special note within the current Jubilee celebrations, and would be the ultimate anniversary gift to one’s collection.”

If you’re interested in bidding on this (potentially) royal Rover, the auction starts on Sunday, May 29 at 11:30 GMT.
