VW Shows Off The New Amarok’s Tailgate, Reveals 7,716-Pound Towing Capacity

Volkswagen is expected to unveil the latest iteration of its Amarok pickup later this year but it is already giving us a look at the truck’s rear end and has revealed how much it will be able to hold.

With its name boldly emblazoned on the rear tailgate, the Amarok joins the scores of other trucks that have chosen to use their tailgates as a blank page. Not satisfied with just the rear, though, on some models, the name will also appear on the front of the truck, presumably within the grille.

Volkswagen also took the time to reveal what the truck will be able to carry. The new Amarok will be capable of towing up to 3.5 tonnes (7,716 lbs) and it will be able to haul up to 1.2 tonnes (2,645 lbs) in its bed.

The result of a collaboration with Ford, the Amarok will be based on the same platform as the new Ranger. Volkswagen has previously revealed that it will offer the truck with one gas engine and four diesels. Ranging in size from 2.0-liter four-pots to 3.0-liter V6s, at least one option will be a V6 TDI with “plenty of torque and power.” Customers will be able to select between all- or rear-wheel drive.

Those engines will be spread across four trims. As a “premium” pickup, even its lower Life and Style trims will be reasonably well equipped. The PanAmericana and Aventura trims, though, will be the real highlights of the range.

No matter what trim is selected, the Amarok will come with LED lights but higher-tech IQ.Light LED matrix headlights will also be available for drivers who really want to stand out.

The 2023 Amarok is expected to be revealed late in 2022 and will be built in South Africa.
