The original BMW X2 was a swing and a miss – as was the identification of this prototype.
While the camouflaged tester seen here was originally, mistakenly believed to be the next-generation X4, a closer inspection revealed that the crossover coupe shares a number of similarities to the 2023 X1, including the wheelbase and the distance between the front door and the wheel arches, so this means it’s actually the redesigned X2.
The confusion is understandable as BMW is currently testing the redesigned X3, and it’s only natural to assume X4 prototypes will soon make an appearance. On top of that, the prototype features a conventional crossover coupe design whereas the current X2 looks like a glorified hatchback.
First Look: We Get Up Close To The Redesigned 2023 BMW X1
The car-like design has likely hampered sales and it appears BMW is doing something about it as the redesigned model now looks like a proper crossover coupe. As you can see, it sports a prominent grille and sweptback headlights that appear to carryover from the X1.
They’re joined by a sizable front overhang and a rakish windscreen that flows into a sloping roof. The crossover has also been equipped with flush-mounted door handles, an increased ride height, and an evolutionary greenhouse. Other notable highlights include an upright rear end and an angular rear window that directs air to a prominent spoiler.
Spy photographers didn’t get a look inside, but the model should follow in the footsteps of the X1. As a result, we can expect a Curved Display that consists of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment system.
Other highlights could include Augmented Reality navigation, an Intelligent Personal Assistant, and a Remote Theft Recorder that can catch criminals on video. The crossover could also have Digital Key Plus technology, which enables iPhone owners to unlock the model without even having to take their phone out of their pocket or purse.
We’ll likely learn more in the coming months, but the US-spec model should be powered by a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine that develops 241 hp (180 kW / 244 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. It will likely be connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an all-wheel drive system.
