Porsche’s DesignCar App Now Lets You Customize A Bugatti And Nissan Z From Your Smartphone

A smartphone app enabling players to modify virtual Porsches has been expanded to include customization options for other car brands including Audi, Bugatti, and Nissan.

Developed by Porsche Digital and originally released this time last year, the free-to-play DesignCar app works a little like an automaker’s retail configurator program, allowing users to choose the color and spec of their dream car, but with more scope for creating individual designs. Players modify their digital cars and take part in community-judged design challenges that can earn them credits to spend on further modifications.

The app launched with access to virtual Porsches, Audis, and Volkswagens, but the maker said at the time that it would eventually be open to other brands, too. Fast forward a year and that has happened. But the surprise is that the newly added brands aren’t restricted to fellow VW Group marques.

Yes, you can now configure Bugatti vehicles as well as Porsches or VWs: one of the sample images show a heavily modified version of VW’s 2014 XL Sport concept car. But the app also features cars from the likes of Nissan, Infiniti, Datsun, Jaguar, and Land Rover. Another supplied picture includes images of a 2023 Nissan Z and an early 1990s Nissan R32 Skyline GT-R.

Other companies jumping on board include fractional collectibles investing platform Rally, and peer-to-peer car-sharing enterprise Turo, whose names will appear on in-game challenges.

“For many car enthusiasts, it’s not just about performance, it’s also about design, creativity and community,” says Stephan Baral, Managing Director at Porsche subsidiary, Porsche Digital. “The wonderful thing about DesignCar is that it allows users to build the garage of their dreams full of their favorite cars regardless of their budget and to share it with the community.”

DesignCar is currently not available outside of North America.
