Tank, a subsidiary of Great Wall Motors focused on off-road vehicles, published the first photo of its third SUV, called Tank 700. As suggested by its name, the new model will slot above the already available Tank 300 and Tank 500, with a similar footprint to the Toyota Land Cruiser Series 300.

The photo was published on Tank’s official Weibo account, showing a black-painted SUV in three-quarters view. Predictably, the production version of the SUV looks very similar to the Tank 700 concept from 2021 retaining the boxy shape with a few toned-down features. Interestingly, the teaser was posted shortly after less flattering photos of the SUV appeared in the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Technology, showing a lower-spec example.

Other changes compared to the concept include the simpler bumpers and spare wheel cover, the smaller taillights, and the omission of the quad tailpipes at the back. Tank joked about this on social media saying that the teaser is a more beautiful “ID photo” of the new SUV.

According to the spec sheet from China’s MIT, the Tank 700 measures 5,090 mm (200 inches) long, 2,061 mm (81.1 inches) wide, and 1,952 mm (76.9 inches) tall with a generous wheelbase of 3,000 mm (118.1 inches). This means it is only 20 mm (0.8 inches) longer compared to its Tank 500 stablemate but with an extra 150 mm (5.9 inches) on the wheelbase. It is also slightly larger than the Toyota Land Cruiser Series 300 in all dimensions.

There are no official details about the powertrain, but we expect the Tank 700 to inherit at least some to the engine options from the Tank 500. Tank’s turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine would make a great fit, making 349 hp (260 kW / 353 PS) in mild-hybrid form and up to 510 hp (380kW / 517 PS) in full hybrid form. It could also come in a plug-in hybrid guise with the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motors, offering a combined output of 402 hp (300 kW / 408 PS)

Chinese media report that the production version of the Tank 700 will debut at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2023, with its market launch in the Chinese market following shortly after that. Besides the Tank 700, the company plans on further expanding its SUV range with the small Tank 100, the medium-sized Tank 400, and the flagship Tank 800 in the next few years.
