The VW Group sold 341,147 EVs in Europe last year compared to Tesla’s 232,018

The Tesla Model Y and Ford Kuga topped EV and PHEV sales charts in Europe last year, beating out their competition by large margins.
On the electric vehicle front, a study from JATO Dynamics of 28 European markets revealed that some 137,052 Tesla Model Ys were registered throughout 2022, representing a significant jump of 424 per cent from 2021 when local sales of the Model Y began. Following the Model Y was its sedan twin, the Model 3, with a total of 91,475 registrations which was actually a decline of 35 per cent.
Taking out the final spot on the podium was the Volkswagen ID.4 with 67,490 registrations, narrowly edging out the Fiat 500e with 66,198 registrations. Other vehicles in the top 10 included the Volkswagen ID.3, Skoda Enyaq iV, Dacia Spring, Peugeot e-208, Hyundai Kona Electric, and the Kia Niro EV. Sitting just outside the top 10 were the likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (37,312 sales), Cupra Born (32,405 sales), Polestar 2 (31,734 sales), and the Kia EV6 with 28,786 sales. Surprisingly, the Nissan Leaf outsold the EV6 with 28,816 sales despite being considerably older and, in our opinion, inferior.

A grand total of 1.54 million BEVs were sold in Europe last year, representing a 29 per cent increase over 2021.
In terms of PHEVs, the Ford Kuga led the way with 57,924 sales, retaining its crown from 2021. It was followed by plug-in variants of the BMW 3-Series (32,405 sales), Volvo XC40 (31,234 sales), Hyundai Tucson (29,043 sales), Volvo XC60 (28,409 sales), Peugeot 3008 (28,358 sales), Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (27,134 sales), Jeep Compass (25,860 sales), Lynk & Co 01 (25,798 sales), and the Kia Sportage with 25,444 sales.

The Volkswagen Group led the EV sales chart with a total of 349,147 registrations, placing it ahead of Tesla with 232,018 registrations and Stellantis with 230,383. The Volkswagen Group also led PHEV sales with some 183,065 units, leading Stellantis with 147,051 sales, the BMW Group with 141,116 sales, and Mercedes-Benz with 134,054 sales.
In Europe as a whole, ICE-powered vehicles accounted for 51.4 per cent of all sales, a decline from the 57.9 per cent of 2021. BEVs accounted for 13.9 per cent of the market, PHEVs 9.1 per cent, hybrids 8.7 per cent, and mild hybrids 15.3 per cent.
