Since the debut of the Tesla Cybertruck in concept form back in 2019, we have seen several development prototypes of the electric pickup driving around in the US. However, we had yet to see how the EV looks in the promised off-road driving mode, at least until a new video appeared online.
The footage was uploaded on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum by a member called Trucky. While the resolution is very low, we can see the pickup driving on the factory floor with a significantly increased ground clearance.
Back in 2020, Elon Musk tweeted that they were working on “increased dynamic air suspension travel for better off-roading”, promising that the Tesla Cybertruck would “kick butt in Baja“. That is also when he revealed that the EV would have the ability to float on water. Three years later, we still haven’t seen proof of any of those claims but we keep our fingers crossed.
As depicted in the video, the adaptive air suspension in what appears to be its highest setting makes the wheels look tiny in comparison but could vastly improve the Cybertruck’s ability to overcome obstacles. Users of the forum argued that while a larger set of wheels with grippy all-terrain tires would look better, they would limit the on-road abilities of the truck and not allow the suspension to lower as much for improving aerodynamics and handling on the tarmac. Indeed, earlier prototype sightings of the Cybertruck showed it sitting much closer to the ground, with the wheels pretty much filling up the angular wheel arches.
Tesla fans have been patiently waiting for the final production version of the Cybertruck that is set to arrive this year. After several delays, production is scheduled to commence in the summer of 2023, although volume production won’t start before 2024.
