The much-loved Lamborghini Huracán will be replaced by a followup model by the end of 2024, the company’s CEO recently said. The move could spell the end of vehicles with no electric assistance for the automaker.

“At the end of 2024 a completely new Huracán will come to market,” Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini’s CEO, told Road & Track. He added that the new model will feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

The confirmation follows comments made by the CEO in 2021, when he announced that the entire Lamborghini lineup would be hybridized by 2024. It was also made as the automaker revealed that the followup to its flagship supercar, the Aventador, will have a 1,001 hp (747 kW/1,015 PS) plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

Lamborghini still has not revealed the name of the model, but did announce today that it will be powered by a 6.5-liter V12 and three electric motors supplied with electricity by a lithium-ion battery back that runs down the middle of the car.

Code named L545, Lamborghini’s V12 will remain naturally aspirated, but has been “heavily reworked.” Before the electric motors are even counted, it is said to be more powerful than the version that currently powers the Aventador and runs its 814 hp (607 kW / 825 PS) to the rear wheels through a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Lamborghini has not yet said when it will unveil the new flagship model, but said that it will be soon. The model may provide a hint as to how the automaker plans to electrify its lineup in the near term, as it reckons with possible bans on internal combustion engines in Europe and California in 2035.

Whether the automaker will see the Huracán out with any more special edition models remains to be seen, but fans of the V10 will no doubt be happy to celebrate the car’s legacy if given the opportunity.
