Following the launch of the facelifted A-Class and CLA in previous months, Mercedes debuts the updated GLA and GLB which benefit from similar advancements. More specifically, the compact SUVs gain fresh styling touches, additional equipment, and a mild-hybrid boost for their petrol powertrains.

The most notable change is the redesigned front bumper with sportier intakes and a slightly different grille. This is combined with dual “power domes” on the bonnet, a feature previously limited to the AMG variants.

A closer look reveals the revised LED graphics on the headlights and taillights. Mercedes also mentions the new Spectral Blue exterior shade, and four new alloy wheel designs ranging from 17 inches to 20 inches in diameter. The company only showed pictures of the similarly-styled AMG Line and AMG variants of the SUVs, so we don’t know the extent of the updates in lesser trims. Thankfully the old halogen headlights are gone since all GLA and GLB models come standard with LEDs at the front.

More Generous Equipment

Inside, entry-level models feature a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch central touchscreen, with the dual 10.25-inch displays being reserved for higher trims. The latest version of the MBUX infotainment brings wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, optional mini-games, and an improved voice assistant that learns the preferences of the driver. A cool addition is the “Tourguide” function of the voice assistant, which is initially available exclusively in Germany providing useful information about points of interest along the route on demand.

Mercedes added an extra illuminated USB-C port with faster charging rates for your devices. Furthermore, the leather-wrapped and optionally heated steering wheel has been upgraded to the latest twin-spoke design. The standard comfort seats are upholstered in Artico man-made leather and embossed fabric. Color options for the interior include black, macchiato beige, and sage grey for the Progressive trim, plus the AMG Line specific bahia brown and red pepper/black.

The 10-color ambient lighting and the optional Burmester surround sound system with Dolby Atmos are for those who enjoy more premium creature comforts in their Mercedes SUV. In terms of safety systems, Mercedes improved the Driving Assistance package and the Parking package with a 360-degree camera. A simple rear-view camera and the Highbeam Assist are standard in all trims, with the Trailer Manoeuvering Assist being available in the GLA/GLB for the first time.

Slightly Improved PHEV, Mild-Hybrid Petrol, And Carry-Over Diesels

The revised engine range is largely shared between the SUVs, with the only exception being the GLA 250e plug-in hybrid which is not available for the GLB. The facelifted PHEV has a slightly more powerful electric motor although the combined output remains stable at 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and 450 Nm (lb-ft) of torque. The 11.5 kWh battery is also carried over, offering a WLTP zero-emission range of 62-70 km (39-43 miles).

The petrol engine options of the GLA and GLB – including the 35 AMG – have been mildly electrified, with the carry-over diesels remaining ICE-only. The new 48-volt mild-hybrid system features a belt-driven starter-generator that helps lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions, while offering up to an extra 13 hp (10 kW / 14 PS) for a brief period of time.

Both the mild-hybrid petrol and the non-electrified diesel powertrains are combined with a 7 or 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with Mercedes effectively discontinuing the manual option from its entire range. Power is transmitted to either the front or to all four wheels depending on the variant. The lineup is expected to expand further in the near future with the addition of the GLA 45 AMG performance flagship.

Mercedes hasn’t announced pricing for the updated GLA and GLB. However, judging from the electrification and the extra features, it is possible that they will be slightly more expensive compared to their predecessors.
