The second generation of the Toyota C-HR is going through the last stages of development before its official debut in Europe at the end of 2023. Our spy photographers caught a new prototype of the new C-HR at the Nurburgring, covered by a thin camouflage wrap that did little to hide its quirky styling.

The production version of the compact SUV appears to closely mirror the Toyota C-HR Prologue concept from 2022. In fact, the silhouette, the surfacing, and the greenhouse with the tiny rear side windows appear to be nearly identical to the concept, with the exception of the more conventional pillars and the smaller-diameter wheels.

Changes are focused on the bumpers and lighting units which have been slightly toned down for production. The bumpers also appear to benefit from a heavier dose of protective cladding, especially at the rear which features a much smaller diffuser. The large grille at the front features a honeycomb pattern and integrates the fog lights, but appears to be fully or mostly covered.

The hammerhead-style LED headlights look slightly larger, while the protruding full-width taillights might have lost the diagonal element moving toward the roof. Speaking of which, the dual rear spoiler and the heavily inclined rear glass make it to production, together with a set of flush door handles.

Earlier spy shots of the interior revealed that the C-HR will have a central infotainment touchscreen that is separate from the digital instrument cluster, unlike the majority of rival SUVs which house them under the same panel. Toyota claims that the new C-HR will be “more spacious and practical” compared to its predecessor which debuted back in 2016 and got facelifted in 2019.

During the presentation of the Toyota C-HR Prologue concept on December 2022, the automaker confirmed that the production-spec model would be available with hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options. Those could be shared with the larger and sleeker Toyota Prius, as with the TNGA-C architecture. Furthermore, the previous spy appearance of a C-HR prototype hinted that it could also be available with a fully electric powertrain. After all, an electric variant of the outgoing generation is already available in China.

The 2024 Toyota C-HR will be produced in Turkey just like its predecessor, but the battery packs will be assembled in Europe from imported battery cells. It will be offered in Europe but not in North America where Toyota decided to discontinue the nameplate in favor of the larger Corolla Cross.
