The Chevrolet Equinox is a solid, but unexciting crossover. However, designers in China have decided to throw some spice into the mix and they’ve created an Equinox worth looking at.

Revealed by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the redesigned crossover adopts a far more rugged and expressive design. It immediately stands out thanks to a nearly vertical front fascia with a prominent grille and a single chrome bar. They’re joined by split lighting units, which recall those found on the Blazer and Trax.

Moving down the side, we can see muscular and squared off wheel arches that are covered in plastic body cladding. The model also sports sculpted bodywork and a revamped greenhouse. Speaking of the latter, the third quarter glass area has been reimagined and the window visually flows into a chunky C-pillar.

The rear is pretty tame by comparison, but the Chinese Equinox features L-shaped taillights and a liftgate with a pronounced trapezoidal recess. We can also see a plain rear bumper as the exhaust system has been hidden away.

According to the government listing, the Equinox measures 183.2 inches (4,653 mm) long, 74.9 inches (1,902 mm) wide, and 67.3 inches (1,710 mm) tall with a wheelbase that spans 107.5 inches (2,730 mm). To put those numbers into perspective, the redesigned model is a mere 0.04 inches (1 mm) longer than the US-spec crossover and its wheelbase only grows by 0.2 inches (5 mm). While those dimensions are virtually unchanged, the upcoming model is 2.4 inches (59 mm) wider and 1.9 inches (49 mm) taller – although the document also mentions two other, slightly taller heights.

Power is provided by a 1.5-liter engine, which we assume is turbocharged. It produces 170 hp (127 kW / 173 PS) and enables the crossover to hit a top speed of 118 mph (190 km/h).

It remains unclear if the model could preview the US-spec Equinox, but reports have suggested the American crossover will be redesigned next year.
