The 2024 Toyota GR86 TRUENO Edition is a clear and direct callback to the AE86. As such it comes with far more than just fancy graphics to continue the drifting fun. Everyday GR86 buyers also get some upgrades and available options to look forward to.

It’s been four decades since the introduction of the AE86 and in the 1990s it reached the height of its popularity with the Trueno GT-Apex Liftback. This new GR86 calls back to it with more performance goodies and a black-and-white “Panda” color scheme called Halo. It says that another color dubbed Track bRed is coming too. Toyota’s only going to make 860 of them in total for all of the USA.

Aside from the obvious visual callbacks, the new GR86 TRUENO Edition gets special ZF Sachs dampers and Brembo brakes. The dampers utilize nitrogen and oil to absorb vibrations, maximize ground contact, and support firm, stable steering. They’re common in the aftermarket and generally well-regarded.

In addition, the Brembo brakes utilize a four-piston setup for the front and a two-piston caliper for the rear. The rotors are smooth so they lack any type of drilling or slotting. Buyers can choose from an automatic or manual transmission.

All TRUENO cars will come with 18-inch 10-spoke aluminum wheels along with black door handles and mirror caps. They’ll all make the same 228 hp (170 kW) and 184 lb-ft (259 Nm) of torque that the normal version does.

Upgrades For All GR86 Buyers

The performance parts from the TRUENO Edition are going to be available to the rest of the GR86 lineup. In fact, the performance package can even be applied to the 2022 and 2023 versions of the GR86 for those that want it. Finally, GR86 Active Safety is available on manual transmission-equipped models.

Active Safety includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, sway warning, lead vehicle start alert, and rear sonar warning. That’s a big deal since Subaru hasn’t always been so progressive in terms of adding advanced safety features to the manual BRZ twin. The 2024 GR86 TRUENO Edition arrives in winter and we’ll find out about pricing between now and then.
